16.09.2009- A dose of Florence for Friday

I absolutely adore Florence and the Machine, and am so excited to see them perform as part of the BBC's Electric Proms, in the culmination of the BBC's 'New Music Shorts' competition, which began earlier this year. Entrants were asked to create a short film based around the music of Florence and her band, and the winner, announced today, is Keith McCarthy, who developed his film around the track 'Dog Days Are Over'. The six and a half minute film will be screened before the band perform at the Roundhouse in Camden next Thursday (the 22nd of October), but is available to watch at the Florence and the Machine Electric Proms mini-site now (available to UK residents only).

I love the way that subtle allusions to lyrics in the song are made throughout, and the cinematography is simply stunning, even though the locations used seem quite everyday and unremarkable. The narrative of the film also fits perfectly into the allotted short time frame, making it the perfect companion piece to a track which, like most of Florence's music evokes a fairy tale magic which is impossible to forget.

And just because I love it, here is the original video for Dog Days Are Over, released last year:
