17.02.2016- Vogue 100: A Century of Style

Think about fashion, and the chances are that one of the first things which springs to mind is Vogue. A title which has become completely synonymous with style- and imbued with an almost holy sentiment since it first hit the shelves on these shores in 1916. No surprise then, that the National Portrait Gallery have chosen to mark this centenary with a very special exhibition. Vogue 100: A Century of Style, which opened last week, showcases the incredible array of photography commissioned by British Vogue since that all important first issue, and includes over 280 prints from the Condé Nast archive, as well as a selection from international collections, all coming together under one roof to capture the magic of one of the most influential fashion titles in the world. Last week, just ahead of the public opening, I was lucky enough to be invited along for a special preview of the exhibition, and, as you'd expect, it was a suitably stylish affair:

The wonderful thing about this exhibition is that, as well as tracing the history and influence of Vogue, it also captures the truly unique creative magic which makes the British publication so special. Since its inception during the First World War, the pages of the publication have reflected, captured, and indeed set the agenda for British fashion, and it's fantastic to trace the heritage of so many iconic fashion moments and movements as you walk through the fabulously designed (as one would expect!) space.

There's a special kind of alchemy at work with British Vogue, and that well and truly comes across here, most notably through the inclusion of incredible work by homegrown photographers such as David Bailey, Nick Knight and Tim Walker, the lineup of British models which continues to dominate editorial shoots, and the incredible design talent which Vogue continues to support. Most poignantly, perhaps, is the floor to ceiling image of Alexander McQueen which greets you as you enter the exhibition space- and indeed this is a wonderful follow up to last year's incredible Savage Beauty, showcasing a different side of the industry and creative process, but one which is equally groundbreaking, provocative and inspiring. Definitely well and truly worth a visit!

Vogue 100: A Century of Style runs at the National Portrait Gallery until 22 May 2016. It's also well worth tuning in to the #MyVogue100 competition on Instagram, as there are some amazing prizes up for grabs!

Will you be visiting this exhibition?
