10.06.2016- Exploring Northern Ireland: Game of Thrones Locations

As the old saying goes, when in Northern Ireland...visit all of the Game of Thrones locations you can! Exploring Westeros (by way of the beautiful scenery of Antrim) was a real highlight of my recent trip, and it was so much fun to see some of the most memorable backdrops in all of the Seven Kingdoms up close. On day one we headed along the Causeway Coast, stopping off at beautiful Portbraddon and Ballintoy Harbour- lately known as the Iron Islands! Luckily the weather was far more welcoming for us than it was when poor Theon docked in Pyke, and Ballintoy proved the picture perfect pitstop for some tea and cake.

Next up (and after a somewhat perilous crossing over Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge!), we inadvertently stumbled across another location in the shape the disused quarry which doubled for Renly's camp in series two- where best girl boss ever/my spirit animal Brienne of Tarth made her first appearance! Our final stop of the day took us away from the coast to a location which proved every bit as eerie as you'd expect- The Dark Hedges. Even on the sunniest of days, there was something suitably spooky about this shadowy path, nstantly recognisable as The King's Road...

As such a huge Game of Thrones fan, it was amazing to tick off so many of these stunning locations- and to see such a diverse breath of backdrops within a comparatively small area. There's something incredibly otherworldly and uniquely beautiful about the landscapes of Northern Ireland- perfect qualities for evoking the fantastical realms of Westeros. It was also lovely to hear how much of a boost the tourist industry has had from HBO shooting on location in the region- a lasting legacy which will continue long after we find out who ends up precariously perched atop the Iron Throne...

Keep your eyes peeled for more of my Northern Ireland posts coming soon!

  1. Loved this day - such amazing locations, so jealous of the person whose job it was to find them all! x
