28.03.2018- On the Menu: Eat By Chloe, Covent Garden

One of the best things about working slap bang in the middle of London is the sheer variety which it offers, whether that’s in terms of the myriad of sights to see, spectrum of shops or plethora of new foodie haunts which pop up so regularly. If anything, I sometimes find myself well and truly spoilt for choice for lunch options during the week, which is why I always tend to prefer exploring new haunts at the weekend- as well as having more time to enjoy them, it means that my bank balance can breath a sigh of relief! One such recent exploration comes in the shape of Eat by Chloe, which has recently opened just off of Drury Lane:

A few years ago, I think it would have been difficult to imagine an exclusively vegan food outlet occupying such a prominent position in the heart of the West End, but such is the power of the ‘wellness’ movement I suppose! The first UK branch of this US-born chain is definitely made with the Instagram generation in mind- complete with statement neon signs, shelves laden with succulents and some seriously photogenic decor, there’s no denying that a lot of thought has been poured into the aesthetic of the brand, from everything to the mirrors in the bathroom to the typeface on the menu. Similarly, the dishes on offer have obviously been constructed with lots of attention to detail, both in terms of the ingredients used and offering alternatives to more traditional favourites- there’s even a selection of specially created dishes dedicated to London.

For me, the sweet potato fries and selection of drinks on offer are standouts, and options which I’d happily reorder. Having said that, there are a few misses in terms of the whole experience- a lack of table service and serious shortage of seating made things feel unnecessarily rushed, with people queuing for our table more or less the instant we started eating. Whilst I’m not sure that I’ll become a regular (or would wait for longer than 10 minutes for a table), there’s no doubt that this is proving to be a popular destination- I just hope that once the teething problems have been ironed out the whole experience (food included) matches up to the appeal of the aesthetic.

Have you visited any new foodie haunts recently?

  1. I am so keen to try By Chloe when I'm back in London but think it might be more for a sneaky Deliveroo! x
