09.01.2012- Monday Must-haves: Back to Basics

Whether your New Year's resolution is to save money, or if you're feeling the need to get thrifty after spending a bit too much at Christmas or in the sales, January is a great time to overhaul your wardrobe. Out go the impulse buys, as you say au revoir to the 'complete bargains' which have been festering in your wardrobe since the day of purchase (I'm the voice of experience on this one!) and farewell to that ultra-trendy but ultra-unwearable outfit which is yet to see the light of day. All in all, January is the perfect month to go back to basics- providing the inspiration for this week's Monday Must-haves:

Whilst this trench coat from French Connection is a little more expensive than the sort of item I generally include in this series, it's an instant wardrobe classic, and cost per wear would inevitably work out at being serious value for money- plus it's slightly more affordable than a Burberry original! This Michael Kors watch is another timeless (pardon the pun!) piece, and I'm determined to save up for one this year- I just love the androgynous edge it can bring to any outfit, and with this beauty on your wrist you can guarantee you'd never be running late. I adore the vivid emerald green colour of this appropriately named 'simplicity' shirt from Oasis, and it's another elegant wardrobe staple which could be dressed either up or down. If you're anything like me, then your handbag has to have space to accommodate everything, and this tan bucket style bag from H&M is the perfect oversize companion- perfect for throwing all of your worldly goods (including the kitchen sink!) into at the drop of a hat. I love these star stud earrings from Warehouse, and think they're a great finishing touch for any outfit- special occasion or otherwise. I've also been meaning to snap up these chain detail pumps from Office for what feels like years- they just ooze a certain Chanel-esque class, don't you think? Finally, after trying for an absolute eternity to find the perfect pair of jeans, the Topshop Kristens have become a wardrobe staple for me since I first bought them last year. The high waist means they sit perfectly, and they are amazingly comfortable- a real go-to basic for me.

What are your wardrobe essentials? And have you vowed to only stick to staples for 2012?

  1. You have done a grand job of summing up what wardrobe essentials should be! (maybe not for everyone but me certainly!) LOVE those chain detail shoes if they're comfy they might have just gone straight to the top of my wishlist! xx

  2. This would make a fabulous outfit X
