27.12.2013- Fashion in Motion: Meadham Kirchhoff

A few weeks ago, I popped along to the V&A after work to catch the latest of their Fashion in Motion presentations, on this occasion focusing on the visionary work of London based designers Meadham Kirchhoff. I always really look forward to their London Fashion Week presentations as they are so full of character and I love the sheer theatricality which they capture from season to season, so the opportunity to see some of their work up close was one not to be missed. As the lovely Michelle and I took our seats in the Raphael Gallery, we were transported to the vivid, bold and somewhat surreal world of Meadham Kirchhoff:

Incorporating some of most celebrated work of Edward Meadham and Benjamin Kirchhoff to date, this Fashion in Motion collaboration was a riot of colour, frou frou detailing and exaggerated embellishments. The Meadham Kirchhoff aesthetic is inspired by a fusion of classical imagery and a modern, riotous sensibility- think Marie Antoinette meets The Runaways. Buttoned up, monochrome ensembles sat in contrast against busy prints and audacious flashes of colour, whilst delicate lace and chiffon jarred with nods to the influence of trash culture which has been pervasive throughout the genesis of the label. Looking at a number of pieces retrospectively in this context, it also became evident just how progressive Meadham Kirchhoff's approach is from season to season, whilst still retaining a series of visual hallmarks which capture a definitive sense of signature style.

Are you a fan of Meadham Kirchhoff?
