07.01.2019- New Year Organisation Hacks

Starting a fresh year can be a pretty overwhelming prospect, especially if you, like me, still have a to-do list as long as your arm leftover from the tail end of 2018. Try as I might, I couldn't quite find the time (or, more accurately, the energy!) to drill down into some of the more serious life admin which I'd resolved to crack at the start of the year, but- and let's be honest about this- who wants to be filing pension paperwork at the weekend?! Whilst the middle of winter is definitely not the most motivating of times to try and make any radical changes in your life, I'm convinced that tackling things in small steps is the best, and most manageable way ahead, so have drawn up a list of organisation hacks for the new year which I hope will come in handy over the next couple of months:

- Diarise
Thoroughly boring unless you're a born bullet journaller, but getting those important dates in your diary makes a massive difference to getting on top of things. I know quite far in advance when I'll need to work later evenings, and having these in my calendar from the get-go is really helpful in allowing me to plan my time a tad better, rather than relying on my foggy old brain to get me through. Similarly, if you've got holidays booked in already, get them noted down- and if you've resolved to make 2019 the year of never forgetting a birthday then getting them in your diary is the best place to start. 

- Declutter
Again- dull, but necessary. I'm generally really bad at accumulating a lot of rubbish and carting it around with me in my handbag (in the past I've found everything from three year old receipts to food in there...!), but this year I'm really keen to not be the bag lady- keeping things as streamlined as possible- if only for the sake of my poor back and mangled right shoulder if nothing else! Seriously though, clear decks = clear mind- or something like that- and there's no point in hanging onto things for the sake of it. 

- Dedicate some time to the small stuff
Breaking life admin up into smaller, more manageable segments is 100% the best way forward- especially if you're a procrastinator to the same level as I am. Whether it's finally finding the time to complete your train compensation claim (something I do actually on the train, using their WiFi, revenge is sweet) or making a point of sorting your banking out- Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither was a disciplined approach to being an adult.

- Don't worry about things you can't control 
Again- there are things in life that you just have to let wash over you- predominantly because worrying about them won't actually do any good in the long run. Whether it's the extortionate cost of travelling on the UK railway (can you tell that I've got a bit of an axe to grind here?!) or any of those other little gripes in life which tend to rub you up the wrong way - better best forgotten, to quote a seminal Steps track.
